When Sal wrote to me to in November of 2023 about putting out an album together, my instinct was to immediately say, hey man, sorry, I’ve got a packed production schedule, but I always - always - listen to the music people send me first, and maaaaaaaan thank goodness I did! Cause, while I do have a pretty packed production schedule this year already, Sal’s music is worth making some wiggle room for!

Sal’s got a knack for writing catchy, comforting folk pop songs in the 90’s-by-way-of-the-50’s tradition that I love so much. His first EP that we’re working on together, How Many Marlboro Miles Do I Have to Travel to Get a Mail-Away Jacket?, gives me immediate Joe Jack Talcum vibes, with a sensitivity reminiscent of Jeff Mangum and a voice that reminds me a little of what I like so much about They Might Be Giants.

So here it is! Due out on February 24th, the album is based on a promotional Marlboro jacket Sal’s grandparents gave him when they were clearing out their house to move. I’m embossing these bad boys onto 8” clear square records using my 1937 Presto 6DSP record lathe to capture the full dynamic range of the recordings, but don’t be surprised if a few versions cut on the more lo-fi 1947 Rek-O-Kut Challenger find their way into the mix. Downloads will be available for pay-what-you-wish on Bandcamp starting on the 24th, and this dang album will be streaming on all major services, too!
