Spiritbox by Katie Haegele
New from zine publisher Displaced Snail comes Katie Haegele's latest book, Spiritbox. A book of high-art meme poetry, Spiritbox works not only as a piece of art, but a piece of therapy, dark humor, confessional, and much more. The physical manifestation is a collaboration between author Katie Haegele and her partner, publisher Joseph Carlough, and was printed by the extraordinarily talented Fireball Printing in Philadelphia, PA. The final book is a beautiful, chunky art object: 130 full color pages printed onto paper so heavy that the tactile experience of holding Spiritbox is just another facet of the book's artistic merit.
From Katie:
The pieces in this book are by turns wishes, affirmations, short stories, confessions, etymologies, therapies, poems, and words of advice. I think of them as literature in the form of memes, which I consider an art form in its own right. I have taken inspiration from my favorite meme accounts, such as @queer_death_stories_, as well as the artist Jenny Holzer, whose work has inhabited my mind for much of my life.
I made these pieces during the summer of 2022 while I was a writer in residence at Gröndalshús in Reykjavík. This residency was a peaceful and fruitful experience for me, and I am very grateful to the UNESCO City of Literature program and the city of Reykjavík for providing it.
In addition to the book, Katie is also release an album of electronic ambient music, layered with spoken word, radio static, and other ethereal sounds titled Electronic Voice Phenomenon. EVP was recorded with Joe at their home in Philadelphia and will be available on cassette and as a digital download. There will also be three high quality art prints rendered from pages of the book.
